Domain and Hosting

 

 

Domain Name is like your shop name and you will need to put a .COM, .NET, or .ORG at the end of the name.
Hosting is like your shop for you to put your products.

There are a few criteria to meet when selecting Domain Names as listed below.

  1. Choose dot com (.com) available domains (preferably)
    • Next alternative is to use dot net (.net)
  2. Ensure domain name reflects the content or products
  3. Make it short if possible
  4. Use hyphen only if really necessary (underscore not valid)
  5. Avoid Copyright Infringement
  6. Avoid buying domain name and hosting from the same source
  7. Don’t fall for free domain name
    • Might registered not under your name but their company name
  8. Beware of domain name ambiguity
    • Eg: Boys Exchange Program – boysexchange > boys-exchange

Types of Hosting

  • Shared Hosting:
    • Lowest form of website hosting
    • Appropriate for new and small websites
    • Sharing server with many other websites
    • Using the same IP address (same server, share the same IP address)
      • Not recommended if sending newsletter
    • Everyone sharing the same infrastructure
    • Someone breaks, everyone affected
    • Cheap and low cost
    • Not much technical knowledge required
      • Only need to know how to use cPanel (Linux hosting platform)
  • Add-On Domain / Sub-Domain:
    • Co-exist with a shared hosting
    • Everything as per Shared Hosting
    • No additional cost
    • Sharing of the same Control Panel
    • Does not have its own document root
    • Resides in a sub-directory or folder
    • Same username and password, security issue
    • No individual website restoration from backup
    • Potential problems when server migration
    • Some website scripts do not work with add-on domain
      ** Sub-domain sits on top of the main domain name
  • Reseller Hosting:
    • Similar to Shared Hosting
    • Will be provided with a block of diskspace and bandwidth
    • Able to host a few domains depending on resource allocations
    • Share server with many other websites
    • Usually can request and pay for own IP address
    • Everyone sharing the same infrastructure
    • Someone breaks, everyone affected
  • Virtual Private Server (VPS):
    • Will be provided with a large allocation of diskspace and bandwidth
    • Able to create reseller accounts
    • All accounts in the VPS share the same resources
    • Own IP addresses (1 or more)
    • Dedicated server resources
    • Higher cost of hosting
    • Some server technical knowledge required
      • Do all installation from your end, install firewall
      • Use Windows VPS to do automation
  • Dedicated Server:
    • Own the whole server (hardware)
    • Able to create reseller accounts
    • Own IP addresses (more than 1)
    • Full server resources
    • Very high cost of hosting
    • Some server technical knowledge required

    What is it?
